OCTOBER 19–23, 2026
Big yellow bus. Even bigger responsibility.
Every ride connects our Cubs with a day of learning. Let’s celebrate the people who get them there—and the little habits that help keep everyone safe.
THIS YEAR’S NATIONAL THEME
Safe Rides, Everyday Heroes
More than 60 years. One shared purpose.
Behind the familiar yellow bus is a long-running effort to help children travel safely. What began with a transportation leader’s advocacy grew into a nationwide reminder: everyone has a part to play.
1963 · A safety movement begins
California transportation leader Richard “Dick” Fischer helped launch School Bus Safety Week, bringing attention to the importance of protecting students on their daily journeys.
1970 · National recognition
Fischer received a presidential commendation for his work—recognition of his commitment to making school transportation safer.
Today · A community effort
Observed during the third full week of October, the week brings families, schools, drivers, and communities together. A national student poster contest helps young voices spread the message.

A quick chat before the next ride.
Review these reminders together. A few minutes at home can reinforce what children learn at school.
01 / At the stop: Give the bus space.
Arrive at least five minutes early. Wait at least 10 feet—about five giant steps—from the curb, and keep play away from the bus stop.
02 / Getting on: Wait. Listen. Board.
Wait until the bus has stopped, the door is open, and the driver says it’s okay to board. Use the handrail as you climb aboard.
03 / Around the bus: Make sure you’re seen.
Never walk behind the bus. If something drops nearby, tell the driver instead of reaching for it yourself.
Grown-ups matter, too.
Stay alert near bus stops and school zones. Give children your full attention and help model patient, careful behavior.
Safety reminders adapted from NHTSA’s school bus safety guidance.
A little thank-you goes a long way.
Our bus drivers help each school day begin and end with care. This week, invite your Cub to make a card, draw a bus, or share a kind word with their driver.
A simple family activity: ask, “What does your driver do that helps you feel safe?” Turn that answer into a personal thank-you.
A starter for your Cub’s thank-you note
“Thank you for helping me get to school safely. You make a difference in my day!”
Add a drawing and a personal message, then sign it with a smile.
Help the message travel.
Share a little bus safety spirit with our coordinated social graphics.
